During the first part of the Autumn term in Year 4, we are studying 'The Romans'. We will explore the history of The Roman Empire, famous Roman gods and goddesses as well as famous rulers and their invasion techniques. In the second part of the term, we shall be learning about 'Volcanoes' where we will find out about the formation of different types of volcano, famous volcanoes and their location and the comparison between them.
In English lessons during the first half of term, we will be writing stories based in historical settings. The children will be using descriptive language and techniques suitable to the genre. In the second half, the children will learn how to write their own newspaper reports.
In maths, the children will learn a range of arithmetic and problem solving skills with an initial focus on place value knowledge. Afterwards, the children will learn about the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) as well as taking part in daily practice of times table facts, in preparation for the Year 4 national times table test next year.
In science, the children are learning about sound and states of matter. The sound topic includes learning about sound waves, how energy is passed from object to ear as well as how sound works in a vacuum. In states of matter, the children will learn about solids, liquids and gases, how they change, which changes are reversible and which are not and the water cycle.
We are completing 2 one-hour lessons of PE a week - these will be on a Wednesday and Friday. We will be studying hockey, dance and gymnastics.
Tuesday - English given out to be returned Friday
Wednesday - Spellings given out to be practised for a test the following Wednesday
Friday - Maths given out to be returned the following Tuesday
There is an expectation to read everyday at home as well as daily times tables practice in preparation for the times table test later in the year. Each child has a log in for Times Table Rock Stars - we recommend this as a way of practising. Please let us know if you need a copy of your child's log in details.
We look forward to starting the new year with you!
