Our first term in Year 5 will cover an array of exciting units and topics.
Our class novel for the first term is ‘Crater Lake’. This eerie story focuses on Lance and his friend’s Year 6 residential trip.
In English, we will be reading, learning and writing a Norse myth. This will link to our history unit and build on the children’s knowledge of polytheism.
In maths, we are focusing on our place value skills, working with numbers up to 1,000,000. We will use these skills when we cover our addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division units. Additionally, one of the main focuses for this year is fluency within times tables. Children should be practising their times tables on a daily basis and any opportunity to do this outside of school will benefit them greatly.
For history, we will be learning about ‘Vicious Vikings’ and their impact on England that its surrounding countries. We will be discovering their way of living, belief system and how their invasion changed Anglo-Saxon England.
In the second half of the term, we will be turning our focus to our geography unit: Mountains. In these lessons, we will be exploring famous mountains from around the world.
Our PE days are Tuesdays and Wednesdays; please come into school in your full PE kit. We will be attending swimming lessons on a Wednesday so the children will need to wear their swimming costume underneath their PE kit on these days.
Homework will be sent out on Fridays and needs to be returned the following Wednesday. The homework needs to be completed to the same standard as expected in class. Furthermore, the children need to be reading to an adult or older sibling every day at home – please write your comments and sign their reading record to confirm this.
We have an exciting term ahead of us!
