Year 6 - Silver Birch

Welcome to Silver Birch Class!

Welcome back to a fresh new year and the spring term of 2022! We hope you had a restful holiday and are looking forward to all of the exciting events and learning taking place this term.

English: In English we will be exploring balanced arguments and digging deep into discussing both sides of a topic.  Children will use the important features taught to write a well-structured balanced argument.  We will then move onto descriptive writing where children will focus on various narratives to develop their story structure, descriptive language, grammar and punctuation skills. Guided reading will take place every day in school and children will be encouraged to choose books from our extensive collections. We are currently enjoying the clas read, 'When the Sky Falls' by Phil Earle - it's a story of a young boy sent to live in London during the Blitz who forges a bond with a gorilla left in the zoo. We encourage a love of reading and the children will have a chance to read their own choice of book quietly and independently - they also have opportunities to visit the KS2 library during the week.

PE: PE days are Monday and Thursday.  Children need to arrive in school in their PE kit - this is
our school uniform on these days and children should wear a white t-shirt, blue jumper/sweatshirt,
with black shorts or jogging bottoms. Children should not wear football shirts please. Hockey continues to be
our focus this term, we are developing the skills taught in the previous term - for safety reasons the children will need to wear a mouth guard. Thursday is circuits and fitness sessions.

Science: Our topic this term is electricity where children will be carrying out many experiments involving simple series electrical circuits.  In Year 6 children will consolidate their electrical knowledge and electrical safety will be discussed.

PSHE: We are moving onto Living in the Wider World this term.  Children will be researching, discussing and debating topical issues, learning about basic human rights and recognising the role of a community.

RE: Clothes is our theme this term.  Do clothes express belief? Children will be exploring dress code and the reason why religions follow certain rules for how people should dress.  We will be looking at what clothes represent for everyone and holding discussions about expressing your own identity through the clothes you wear.

Art: Our topic of Plants and Flowers will teach children about how to use pencil, colour, Hapa Zome printing, sculpture and paper modelling to create quality art work that shows progression in their skills. The children will also have the opportunity to explore the work of India Flint, Alexander Calder, David Oliveira and Henri Rousseau

Maths: We will continue to work on our arithmetic skills each week. We will have a particular focus on decimals, fractions and percentages this term. We will also look at past SATs questions and explore more reasoning skills.

History: We go back to the beginning of the twentieth century and explore the role of women with particular focus on the Suffragette movement.

ICT: We are exploring the important topic of 'Online Safety' - children will be able to identify what is safe practice and what to do if they have concerns.

As ever we are encouraged by how well the children work during the day - we encourage maximum participation during our lessons!

As always, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch.
